Introducing the new 100m series
The 100 m has been the blue riband event since the modern Olympics in 1896. It has produced many legendary athletes. While the sport is often associated with pacing, in reality, a sprinter’s success in the event is more dependent on pure athletic qualities.
Athletes are given three instructions before the race. First, they are instructed to go to their starting blocks, then they are told to run in “on your marks” and finally they are instructed to start running. During the time that they are on their marks, they can preload their muscles and adopt a more efficient starting posture. Once they have reached their top speed, they decelerate and finish the race.
In the history of the 100 m, there have been numerous sprinters who have achieved sub-10 second times. This has been achieved by both men and women. Some of the fastest performers include Carl Lewis, Trayvon Bromell, Andre De Grasse, Elaine Thompson-Herah and Shelley-Ann Fraser-Pryce biographypark.
